Fall Is Here! How to Keep the Cozy and Lose the Fragrance

There’s something wonderful about fall 🍁
Crisp mornings, warm blankets and the return of your favorite sweaters. But as the temperature drops, we start closing our windows and doors, turning on the heat, and spending more time inside our homes. And that brings up the question: Is the air inside your home as fresh as it can be? We want our homes to smell clean and inviting, but using fragranced products like candles, plug in air fresheners, or scented dryer sheets introduce chemicals into the air we breathe! and a clean home doesn't need to smell like anything! Fall is the perfect time to rethink indoor air habits and create a cozy home that smells refreshing and inviting.
Here are 5 ways to keep your home fresh without the fragrance
1. Give your rooms a little fresh air
When the weather cooperates, open your windows for a short period to exchange stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air. Even a brief airing-out will help. Of course if outdoor pollutants are present, or the weather is too cold, keep the windows closed and rely on appropriate filtration instead.
Happy Canary tip: Change out your filter every 60 days - a clean filter helps trap dust, pollen, pet dander, and other airborne particles before they circulate throughout your home.
2. Ditch the scented laundry products
Revamp your laundry room. Scented detergents, fabric softeners and dryer sheets are designed to leave fragrance on your clothing, towels, and bedding. Switch to fragrance-free laundry detergent and skip the fabric softeners and dryer sheets that contain fragrance. Wool dryer balls are one alternative to help with static cling and to separate clothes as they tumble. Look for products labeled fragrance-free, and check the ingredient list whenever possible. And remember, unscented doesn't always mean fragrance-free. Your freshly washed sheets don't need to smell like a tropical island. Clean is clean!
3. Say goodbye to artificial air fresheners
Plug-ins, aerosol sprays and scented candles are all designed to add smells to your environment, not remove the unwanted odors. Many of these fragranced products release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into your home that can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory system. Instead of covering up odors, find the source. Empty the kitchen garbage, clean the drain, wash pet bedding, and address dampness before musty smells become a bigger problem. The goal isn't to mask the odors in your home with perfumes, it's to keep it genuinely clean.
Happy Canary tip: Buy a few snake plants, place one in your livingroom, bathroom and bedroom. They're pretty and clean the air naturally!!
4. Rethink your everyday cleaning products
Almost all products marketed as fresh, like mountain breeze, spring meadow, or citrus clean contain added fragrances. But, you can find great scent-free cleaners for your entire home. Look for fragrance-free dish soap, all-purpose cleaners, bathroom cleaners, and dishwasher products. If you have a favorite cleaner that works beautifully but doesn't leave a lingering scent, that's a keeper! Between scented laundry detergent, dryer sheets, cleaning products, and air fresheners, your home can become a cocktail of competing fragrances. Simplifying your routine and choosing fragrance-free products helps keep your indoor environment fresh without the perfume overload!
5. Let your home smell like home
You don't need scented candles, essential oil diffusers, or room sprays to make your home feel inviting.
Try these simple alternatives:
Keep dust under control. Dust and vacuum regularly, using a vacuum with effective filtration when possible.
Control moisture. Use bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, and fix leaks promptly to help prevent mold.
Change HVAC filters. Follow your system's recommendations and choose a filter compatible with your equipment.
Consider an air purifier. A properly sized HEPA purifier can reduce airborne particles. Activated carbon can help reduce some odors and gases, although no filter removes every pollutant.
Bring in natural touches. Fresh flowers, greenery, and seasonal decorations can make a room feel lovely without adding artificial fragrance. Just remember that some flowers and plants have their own scents or pollen.
And if you love the smell of cinnamon, pumpkin spice, or pine, there's no rule that says you can't enjoy it. The point is to be intentional about what you introduce into your home.
🍂 Your Fall Fresh-Start Challenge
This fall, try a little experiment. For one week, skip the plug-ins, put away the scented candles, switch to fragrance-free laundry products, and choose fragrance-free cleaners.
Pay attention to how your home feels, whether lingering scents decrease, and whether you notice any changes in symptoms you associate with fragrance exposure.
You don't have to change everything overnight. Start with one room, one product, or one new habit. Because here's the thing: Fresh doesn't have to smell like anything.
Let's make this fall about cozy homes, cleaner indoor air, and fewer unnecessary fragrances. And as always, let's keep it happy, healthy, and a little more Happy Canary.
